Uncle Pumplechook inquires Pip about an opening at the Satis house. Pip is first introduced to the different classes of society. He is exposed to the idea of a 'gentleman' and he finally 'understands' his position. -
Jaggers takes Pip to London
Jaggers informs Pip that he is capable of doing something great. Though, he does not tell Pip his benefactor, Pip assumes it is Havisham. Pip is delighted that he is able to fulfil his great expectations. Also, this is the beginning of Pip's 'cockiness'. -
Abel Magwich is Pip's benefactor
Pip realizes that Havisham was only toying with him and giving false hope that she was encouraging his relationship with Estella. Also, Pip learns the story of the convict. -
Orlick attempts to murder Pip
Pip recieves a mysterious letter telling Pip to go to the marshes behind the church. Orlick appears and attempts to kill Pip. Pip also learns that Orlick has been jealous of Pip's relation with Biddy and Estella (Orlicks true lovers), so he was the cause of Mrs. Joe's disability. -
Pip saves Miss Havisham.
Miss Havisham attempts to kill herself by forcibly tossing her body into a lighted chimney. However, Pip sees her just in time to save her. She felt the need to kill herself because she realized the impact of her actions. This is an extremely important time in Pip's life because -

Pip realizes his personality and true emotions. He finds that he actually does care about his family and the people he left behind. -
Pip goes to his village
Pip gathers enough courage to revist his roots. Joe is married to Biddy, so that eliminates his option to marry her. Pip reunites with Estella and may become more than friends. -
