  • Confederate government formed

    The states farthest south, which relied on slavery for agriculture seceded from the United States on February 4, 1861 and formed the Confederate Government.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    This was the first major battle in the Civil War and was a victory for the Confederates.
  • Homestead Act

    The Homestead Act allowed any citizen of the United States to buy 160 acres of governmental land on the condition that it would improve the plot by building a dwelling and cultivating the land.
  • Thirteen Amendment ratified

    The Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery and any form of involuntary servitude, unless as a punishment for a crime.
