Petition of Right
Document prepared by parliment and signed by King Charles I of England in 1628; challenged the idea of the divine right of kings and declared thar evan a Monarch was subject to the laws of the land. -
English Bill of Rights
Document written by parliment and agreed on by William and Mary of England in 1689, designed to prevent abuse of power by english Monarchs. -
Albany Plan of Union
Drafted by Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, under this plan each colonial legilature would elect delegates to an American continental assembly presided over by a royal govenor. -
Boston Massacure
British troops fired on a jeering crowd killing five. -
Boston Tea Party
Communist refused to pay taxes on tea; men disguised as indians descended upon three ships and dumped their cargo of tea into the harbor waters. -
First continental Congress
Held because colonist were very upset about the intolerable acts and the taxes. the intolerable acts were punishments from King George the third put on the colonies for dumping the tea into the Boston Harbor. -
2nd Continental Congress
The second continental congress was presided over by John Hancock, who replaced the aling Peyton Randolph, and included some of the same delegates as the first, but with such notable additions as Benjamin Fanklin and Thomas Jefferson. -
Declaration of Independance
Was a statement adopted by the continental congress which announced that the 13 American colonies then at war with Great Britian regarded themselves as independent states and no longer a part of the British empire. -
Shay's Rebellion
Farmers in western Massachusetts were trying to start new farm but suffered from high debt and were thrown into prison, Farmers then organized their resistance in ways similar to the American Revolutionary struggle -
Articles of Confederation
The articles of the confederations established "a firm league of freidship" amoung the states. Each state kept sovereignity, freedom, indeoendance, and every power. This only included the original 13 states. -
Virginai Plan
Plan presented by delegates from Virginai at the Constitutional Convention, Called for a three branch government with a bicameral legislature in whichi each states financial membership would be determined by its population or financial government for the central governement. -
Philidepphia Convention
Serveral farmers agreed with Roger Sherman of Conneticut; those delegates argued for a stronger exectuive carried the day. The farmers established a sigle executive chosen indepently of congress and with its on distinct field of powers. -
New Jersey Plan
plan presented as n alternative to the Virginai Plan at the Constitution Convention. Called for a unicameral legislature in which each state would be equally represented.
