The earliest empire in Africa was the Ghana. The empire sat between gold and salt mines, this led to the people controlling the trade of the region and building an empire. When the Muslims began their North African conquest, the Ghana merchants grew wealthier and welcomed the Muslims. During the 1200s, the empire began to collaspe due to the constant war between the Muslims of the Sahara. -
