The people from Asia began to arrive around 15,000 to 30,000 years ago.The ice age was a peroid of extrmely cold temperatures when part of the planet's surface was covered in massive ice sheets. The nomads were people who continuossly moved from place to place.

The Olmec and the Mayan

The Olmec emerged between 1500 and 1200 B.C and developed a sophisticated society. It only lasted until 300 B.C
200 A.D the Mayan culture emerged from ideas of the Olmec. They developed calendars and were talented in engineering (builtgreat pyramids). The fall of the empire was caused from the lack of unity of each city-state (900 A.D)

The Ghana Empire

The earliest empire in Africa was the Ghana. The empire sat between gold and salt mines, this led to the people controlling the trade of the region and building an empire. When the Muslims began their North African conquest, the Ghana merchants grew wealthier and welcomed the Muslims. During the 1200s, the empire began to collaspe due to the constant war between the Muslims of the Sahara.

Feudalism was a polictical system in Europe during the Middle Ages in which people worked and fought for nobles who gave them protection and the use of land in return. (500-1400) A.D.

Islamic Civilization

Islam began to convert people from Arabia. In (711) they were called Muslims and had spreaded across Northern Africa. By the (900's) nomadic people controlled trade caravans in the Sahara, who were also Muslims.

Slavery

When the Europeans learned about processing sugar from the Muslims, it beccame very high in demand. They set up sugar plantations on the Mediterranean Islands and used captured Muslims and Slavic people to work on them.

Sugar and Slavery

By the 1400s, the Portuguese and Spanish had joined in on the sugar plantations in the Canary and Maderia Islands. They brought enslaved Africans to work for them. The Africans were sent across the Atlantic torn away from their homes and families

New technology

Astrolabe- a device invented by the ancient Greeks and refined by the Arabbit navigators. Navigational tools were available and essential to exploration. By the 1400s European ships began using lateen sails.
In the 1400s ships called Caravelle were important ships.
Caravelle- portuguese ships that was smaller and capable of carrying 130 tons.

1410 Henry the navigator ( Prince Henry of Portugal ) set up an astronomical and geographical study center at Sagres.
1420 portuguese explorefsr began mapping Africas west coasts.
In 1448 Bartolomeu Flas reached the southern tip of Africa

Years after in 1497 a water route to East Asia had been found.

Spain Sends Columbus West

Columbus and 3 ships left in 1492 headed west. He landed in what today would be the Bahamas. While there he encountered the Taino people and called them Indians because he thought they had reached the fabled Indes

The Columbian Exchange

The european colonists set in motion a series of complex inteactions between the peoples and the environment. The natives and europeans exchanged vital crops/goods. Though much exchnged it changed both worlds drastically. The exchange of bacteria and germs killed millions.

Spain Claims America

During the Treaty of Tordesillas Ferdinand and Isabella had to establish claim to new lands, and had to appeal to the Pope to use Portugal's route. The Line of Demarcation was created to prevent wars between Spain and Portugal. (1493)

The West

When the europeans came along, the native american were all in many small groups.Some groups live in the lands that surround the Pacific Ocean.They didn't practice agriculture and they didn't move around.By the 1500 the people of the west plains uninhabited their villages and they became nomads.

The Eastern Woodlands

All Native Americans in the woodlands provided for themselves by collborating hunting and fishing with farming. Most of the people in the northeast practiced slashing and burning agriculture, which made farming grounds more fertile. By the 1500s the Native Americans developed economies and lifestyles and a wide array of cultures and languages.

The Lure of Gold

West Africa Prospered from gold trade. Gold was in demand because of the Muslim gold coin currency. In the 1200s Europe switched to silver and copper coins. By the 1300s two-thirds of gold in Europe and North Africa had come from West Africa. (800) A.D.

The Toltec and the Aztec
