Changes to the Docklands between 1960-2021

  • Central Pier widened

  • Project to upgrade the docks begins

    To cater for the larger ships arriving, new wharf platform with reinforced concrete is constructed, as well as improvements made to pre-existing ones. Additionally, new swinging basins were developed for the larger ships
  • Cargo storage expansion

    Pre-fabricated steel cargo sheds were constructed to expand available storage. To accomodate cargo, railways were built behind the sheds.
  • Complete removal of gas works buildings

  • Charles Grimes Bridge built

  • Modifications made

    Entrance to the dock was once again widened, and outer sections of Central Pier demolished.
  • Railway removals

    Travelling cranes are removed and sections of crane gantry taken down. Railway tracks on the south-west side of the docks and the sidings on the north-west side are also removed
  • Bolte Bridge Construction

  • The Docks becomes Victoria Harbour

    The Docklands Development begins to develop the area to a more tourist-friendly scene.
  • First commercial building opens

    A NAB banking building opens to public
  • First residential building opens

    Dock 5 Apartments open to public rent
  • Tramlines extended to North-West Docklands

  • Harbour Town Shopping Centre opens

  • Melbourne Star Observation Wheel opens

  • Tram line extensions

    Tram lines from Collins Street extend to Victoria Harbour
