Sod and mud houses
Between 1840's and 1870's, times were difficult for those who chose to migrate Westward. Many faced turmoil as a result of lack of money and materials to build proper housing, in addition to harsh weather, and bad farmland. Houses were built from mud and sod with thatch roofs.

Many Americans wanted to escape the pressures of rural life and migrated to the urban life. As a result of overcrowding from migration, limited room for expansion, and cost; housing developments went upward. The first skyscraper was completed in 1885 in Chicago.

As the population increased and space became limited in urban areas many Americans began to wonder about the quality of urban life. In effort to improved quality of life for those who lived in urban area the City Beautiful movement was created. Central Park in New York was on the first projects of City Beautiful movement.

In the late 1920's, the power of radio surpassed newspapers in that, it provided a medium for more reachable audiences. Radio served as a medium for advertising, syndicated radio programs, debates, music and sporting events.
