    French and Indian War 1754-1763
    War between France and Britain that took place along the frontier between Virginia and Maine. The war started because of ongoing tension in North America between the two countries who each sought to extend their own land into the regions. When the war ended, Britain had a great amount of debt which lead them to taxing the colonists and began the tension between Great Britain and its American colonies giving the Americans the courage to start fighting for their own freedom.
  • Treaty of Paris 1763

    At the end of the French and Indian War, the Treaty of Paris was signed in Paris in 1763. Great Britain gained New France, the French sugar islands in West Indies, the French trading posts in India, and French posts on the west coast of Africa. The ties between American colonies and Great Britain were closer than ever. Colonists no longer had to worry about the French attacking. This ultimately sets the colonists on the path of seeking their independence from Great Britain.

    American Revolution 1775-1783
    Relations between the American colonies and Britain continued to worsen before the Revolution began. The continued taxing and attempting to control the colonists trade made them furious. The global war began with the British attempting to seize American guns and gunpowder in Lexington and Concord. The war occurred all over the colonies until Americans gained the upper hand in the Battle of Harlem Heights. Eventually General Cornewallis surrendered in Yorktown and the colonies were free
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    The attacks at Lexington and Concord were the final draw for the colonists. Continental Congress met at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1776 and agreed to sever ties with Great Britain. The colonies wanted to be newly independent states and not under British rule. The document included a list of grievances against King George III and laid out the foundation of the American government as a republic. America had officially declared war on Great Britain.

    After winning their independence from Britain, America attempted to write a constitution to govern themselves. Many Americans opposed it because they felt it threatened their rights and did not want a repeat of Parliament. The Bill of Rights was drafted in New York City in 179. The document lists the 1st Ten Amendments to the Constitution including right to freedom of speech and right to a speedy trial. It also protects rights given by states.   • War of 1812

    War of 1812
    Just when Americans thought they were free, Britain begins another war by taking American sailors at sea and forcing them to fight on British warships. They also supported native resistance in preventing America from expanding into the Great Lakes region. This war took place along the Great Lakes, in Florida, and New Orleans. Americans won in New Orleans ensuring settlement and commerce. This began an era of partisan agreement and national pride. America was truly free from Britain.
