Kongo Kingdom starts
Kongo Kingdom startede in the 14th century, just north of the mighty Congo River. The Kongo Kingdom started from Bantu-speakers in West Africa. Jan 1 is not the actually date. -

By the 15 century the Kongo Kingdom had expanded south of the Congo River, and had imposed their rule over the regions inhabitants. -

Sao Tome. Portugal takes land.
While on their seach for new lands they conquered Sao Tome, and piece of land off the coast of Africa. There the Portuguese established a great sugar field in order to satisfy Europe's growing desire for sugar. -

Portugal Arrives
The Age of Exploration started in the 1400's when Europeans started to explore new lands. Portugal started their voyage in 1480's to West Africa. This is where the Kongo and the Portuguese started their good & bad interaction. -

New Ruler for the Kongo
Nzinga Mbemba became ruler in 1506 and this was a good sign for Portugal, because Mbemba was the guy who loved Portugal. He later changed his name to Afonso I, and he started to copy everyhting that Portugal did, Religion, names like the capital's name was Mbanza then he made it Sao Salvador, and his own name too! He was the king who made the Slave trade deal with Portugal. -

Slave Trade
The Slave Trade started during the time of the Kongo King Afonso 1. He made a trade with the King of Portugal, and began one of the sadest moments in history. Kongo would trade their own people to become slaves so they could get goods from Europe that they needed. The Slave trade went on for years, from ?-1561. They do not know when it began so I just put 1510. -

Afonso dies. R.I.P.
Before Afonso died he wrote letters to the Portugal KIng pleading him to stop the slave trade, it did not work. By the time Afonso died the slave trade just grew and grew while the Kongo Kingdom became less and less. -

Slave Trade Ends
Kongo Kingdom stopped the trade, and cut itself off from Portugal. -
Jan 9, 1569
WAR!
Kongo went to war with neighboring kingdoms, and had to fight off and invasion by the Jaga. Unable to win the Kongo called for Portugal to help them. With the help from Portugal the Kongo fought off the Jaga. -
Peace & Quiet
Kongo Kingdom slowly regained its stability during the early 1600's. -
