Robert Hooke
Robert Hooke was the first person to discover cells. He did so by examining a piece of cork in a microscope. Hooke saw that the piece of cork was made up of tiny pores, he called these tiny pores cells. Hooke was the first person to observe this and call name these tiny pores cells. Before Hooke scientist had no idea of what made up things were made up of. -
Antony Van Leeuwenhoek
Antony Van Leeuwenhoek was the first scientist to discover unicellular organisms. Leeuwenhoek did this by observing pond scum under a microscope and observing unicellular bacteria. He was able to do this because he created a microscope that was a lot more advance than the ones of his time. Leeuwenhoek proved that not only are cells living but that there are unicellular organisms. -
Robert Brown
Robert Brown was the first scientist to discover the nucleolus of the cell. Brown mostly researched plants and discovered that pollen was traveling in and out of oval-shaped figures in the cell. He named these oval-like figures nucleolus. Brown disproved the scientist before him because he proved that cells were not just pores or cells, but that they actually have parts like the nucleolus. -
Matthias Schleiden
Matthias Schleiden was the first scientist to discover that plants are composed of cells. Schleiden mainly studied plants and came to his discoveries by investigating plant tissue under the microscope. Schleiden discovered that all plants were made of cells, this is how he formed the first generalized statement about cells, " cells are the building block for life for plants.Schleiden proved that plants are made up of cells, whereas before scientist did not think all plants were made up of cells. -
Theodor Schwann
Theodor Schwann was the first scientist to discover that all animals are made up of cells. Just like Schleiden, Schwann investigated tissue under the microscope, but Schwann used animal tissue. Schwann discovered that just like plants, cells are the building block for animals too. Schwann disproved the scientist before him because he proved that animals are made up of cells. -
Rudolf Virchow
Rudolf Virchow was the first scientist to discover how cells increase in number. Virchow had previously made false observations about the how cells increase. Then in 1858 he discovered that cells develop from existing cells. In other words Virchow found that cells reproduce and create more cells. He used this to discover that diseased cells come from healthy cells. Virchows discovery disproved all other cell creation theories by proving that cells reproduce. -
