Missouri Compromise
Henry Clay helped come up with a compromise for Missouri entering the USA. Missouri wanted to be a slave state. However, this would unbalance the amount of slave and free states. Henry then made it to where Missouri was a slave state and Maine would be a free state. -
Nullification Crisis
South Caroline wanted to secede because of the tariffs. As a compromise, Henry Clay lowered the tariff and South Carolina came back. -
Compromise of 1850
The North and South were both wanting California to join their side and nobody could decide which. Because of this, Henry Clay made the Compromise of 1850 saying that California would be a free state but slavery could not be banned. -
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
This act said that any escaped slave that made it to the North could be caught by their owners and brought back to the South. -
Bleeding Kansas 1855
Many people came from Missouri and voted proslavery for Kansas illegally. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott sued for his freedom as he was a slave. He did not win the court case and was called property by the judge and stayed a slave. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight by going and stealing guns and attacking Harpers Ferry. No slaves joined him and Brown was captured, eventually put to death. -
The Election of 1860
In this election, Abraham Lincoln won. As a cause of this, Southern states began to secede because they wanted to keep slavery there.
