Missouri Compromise
Missouri wanted to enter the union but wasn't sure whether to enter as a free state (11-10) or as a slave state (10-11). Maine would enter as a free state while Missouri would enter as a slave state (11-11 balance). Henry Clay came up with the compromise. Any state north of the 36th parallel would be a free state (excluding Missouri) while any state south of the 36th parallel would be a slave state. The North added more land while the South gained Missouri. -
Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso is about David Wilmot. The North was pushed into recognition that slavery was banned in the Northern States. We are happy Wilmot brings up the topic. This forced southern politicians to defend their stand on slavery. How dare you bring the topic up. This proviso was to resolve the Mexican-American War. -
Zachary Taylor
Zachary Taylor was a hero of the Mexican-American war and he never voted. He is a son of a frontier farmer and owned lots of slaves. He was against the Compromise of 1850 and vetoed it. He was for Nationalism which is to work as a nation. He was in favor of California to become a free state and favor slavery not heading to the west. -
Compromise of 1850
Henry Clay came up with this compromise. There were five things that came out of this compromise:
1. California was admitted as a free state, with its current boundaries.
2. The slave trade, but not slavery altogether, was banned in DC.
3. The Utah and New Mexico Territory were allowed whether or not slavery was allowed.
4. The Fugitive Slave Law was strictly enhanced.
5. Texas surrendered it's claim of New Mexico.
The north was happy and angry and the south was angry and happy as well. -
Millard Fillmore
Millard Fillmore had a poor background. His focus was on compromising anything and everything. He signed the Compromise of 1850. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The fugitive slave act was created to make sure that runaway slaves were captured and returned to their masters. The fugitive slave act infuriates the North. The South is good we are getting slaves back. The slaves were the people in this event. This happens all over the U.S. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. She inspired many to join the abolition movement. This novel is the novel of the century. The North is horrified by the stories and they felt they had to do something. A must read novel the novel becomes. The South is insulted, felt misrepresented, and they end up banning the book. The goal was to explore the reality of slavery. Humanity can be saved through Christianity. -
Franklin Pierce
Pierce was a little well known and he was a son of a war hero. He was a friend of Andrew Jackson and he was a Democratic. He signed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was signed by president Franklin Pierce in 1854. The goal of this act was to open land for the Transcontinental Railroad. Stephen Douglas wanted the railroad to run through Chicago, IL his home state. The north is happy while the south doesn't care. -
Bleeding Kansas
Bleeding Kansas is when Kansas could choose whether to be a free state or a slave state instead of the government choosing. Both northerners and southerners fled into Kansas to cast their vote. Kansas ends up being a slave state. The northerners flood into Kansas. The Northern Yankees flood to Kansas armed with "Beecher's Bibles". The North is angry. The Southerners flood into Kansas and they are happy. -

The founding of the Republican Party was held in Ripon, WI in 1854. The party quickly spread in the north states. The north is happy while the south do not care. -
Sumner Caning
Sumner Caning is when Preston Brooks used a walking cane to attack Charles Sumner. Charles Sumner attacked Andrew Butler who is a cousin of Preston Brooks. Two days later Preston Brooks kept on attacking Sumner until Ambrose S. Murray and Edwin B. Morgan were able to restrain Brooks. The North's perspective was "We have take away Sumner." The South's perspective was "You are a hero Brooks." -
James Buchanan
James Buchanan was a dull politician and a lawyer who lived in PA, a Democratic, and who was hated by Andrew Jackson. The fate of slavery will be decided by the Supreme Court. -
Dred Scott Case
The Dred Scott Case was that Dred Scott was a slave who moved to a free state with his owner John Sanford. Dred Scott said "since I had moved to a free state, I am free." He sued his owner but this time in federal court. The decision was 7-2 in which the South had more power. They denied Scott's request. This was the second time the Supreme Court had ruled an Act of Congress unconstitutional. The North is angry while the South is happy. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
The Lincoln-Douglas Debates was a series of seven debates held in Illinois. The first candidate spoke for 60 minutes the second candidate spoke for 90 minutes and then the first candidate was allowed a 30 minutes rejoinder. Douglas spoke first in four debates. Lincoln lost the debates. The North is happy about Lincoln while the South is worried about Lincoln. -
Harper's Ferry
Harper's Ferry is a raid that John Brown to take over the United States arsenal. The raid started on October 16 and lasted to October 19. John Brown was tried and was executed by hanging him. Robert E. Lee led the group of U.S. Marines to retake the arsenal. The North called him a hero or martyr while the South called him a terrorist. -
Lincoln's Election of 1860
Lincoln's election of 1860 was a four-way contest in which Abraham Lincoln became President while Hannibal Hamlin became Vice-President. Both Lincoln and Hamlin each got 180 votes out of the 152 necessary. -

The Southern Secession was when South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee seceded from the Union. However in 1865 when the Confederates lost the Civil War the states had to rejoin the Union
