    The Missouri Compromise took place in 1820. It temporarily quieted the differences between the North and South. The Missouri Compromise was started and led by Henry Clay. The Missouri Compromise was passed making Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state.

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso took place in 1846. It was named after David Wilmot who was a Democrat in the United States House of representatives and was from Pennsylvania. After the bill passed in the house it Failed in the Senate, this causes them to be upset. The states were California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and parts of Colorado. The south felt this was an attack on slavery by the north.

    1-California would be a free state
    2-New Mexico and Utah would decide for themselves by popular sovereignty
    3-no slave trade in DC
    4-fugitive slave law passed
    5-Texas would give up claim over New Mexico for 10 million

This event involved Harriet Beecher and the American people. She wrote it in Kentucky, however, people in the north and south read it. This impacted history because The issue of slavery became more serious and more people turned against it. Because of the book, the tension between the north and the south over slavery grew bigger.

    This event occurred in 1854. This event involves Senator Douglass and he passed the Kansas Nebraska act (this act). The act allowed people in the territories to decide the slavery issue by popular sovereignty. This took place in Kansas and Nebraska. Charles sumner was beaten on the Senate floor. The southerners supported the act because it may help the state become a slave state. The north was upset because they felt it was going to allow more slave states.

    The Dred Scott case took place in 1857. Dred Scott was a slave that tried to argue that he was a free man and lived in a free state. The supreme court ruled that he could not have freedom because he did not have citizenship. The north feared the spread of slavery and was absurd. The Southerners were happy that slavery was legal everywhere now.

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    This occurred in 1858. This event involved Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. They started a series of debates about slavery while running for Senate. Douglas argued that Lincoln wanted slaves to be equal. He felt states should decide the issue of slavery themselves. Lincoln felt slavery was wrong and should not spread to the west. This took place in Illinois. It showed the different views about whether slavery should continue. Douglas won Senate. But later the two met again.
  • John Brown’s Raid

    John Brown’s Raid
    This took place in 1859. John Brown (an abolitionist from the north), his followers, and slaves from the south attacked Harpers Ferry Virginia and seized guns and started a slave revolt. The was captured and ten of his men were killed. He was found guilty of murder and treason and was hanged. It took place in Harpers Ferry Virginia. John Brown was against slavery and the southern government and motivated by the bible. Southerners felt this was an attack on their way of life.

    Lincoln’s election took place in 1860. In the election, Lincoln believed that Congress has no right to say whether there can be slavery in the Western territories. He did believe they had a right to ban slavery in the West. In the end, won in every free state, Breckinridge won most of the slave states, Bell won 3 states in the upper south, and Douglas won Missouri. Two candidates ran for president but, Lincoln one. This occurred in Virginia. The south was upset.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    This happened in 1861 and took place in the south. The original states were South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, Virginia. The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the American Civil War, there was shooting here on April 13th. Later, Lincoln became president. The south thought that this was unfair because Lincon was against slavery. This made them want to move away and start another country with their own rules.
