The Missouri Compromise
Above the 3630 line slavery was not allowed. Maine enters as a free state and Missouri enters as a slave state. This caused tension because half wanted slavery and the other half didn't. -
Tariff of Abominations
This divides the country. The North supports it but, but the South oppses it and threatens to leave the Union in protest. This caused tension because once again the North and South are not in agreement. -
Wilmot Proviso
All land gained frome Mexico would be free, but did not pass. This caused tension because if it would have passed the South would have been mad. -
Compromise of 1850
Slave trade is outlawed in Washington D.C, popular sovernty will be used to determine weather a state will be free or not, California enters as a free state, and the fugitive slave law is created. This caused tension because it made the South mad since slave trading wasn't allowed anymore. -
Republican Party Created
Main goal was to stop the expansion of slavery. This caused tension because it made the South mad. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The people on the territory would vote weather slavery should be allowed or not. This caused tension because there would be people moving North and South voting in favor of the other. -
Bleeding Kansas
Mini Civil War in Kansas over the slavery debate, would Kansas be a free or a slave state? This caused tension because it was the first battle. -
Election of 1860
Republican: Lincoln
Democrats: split into two
Parties: Breckenridge and Douglas
Constitutional Party: Bell South Carolina feared that Lincoln would end slavery and decide to secede from the Union. -
Confederate States of America
Eleven states broke away and formed their own country. Jefferson Davis is the president. -
