The Wilmot Plan
David Wilmot proposed an idea to not have the new territory gained from the war with mexico be slave states. This proposal was shot down but sparked conversation regarding the immoral use of slaves. -
The Compromise of 1850
The compromise allowed California to be a free state, but also made the union states want to return escaped slaves to the south from the fugitive act. The compromise didn't help though, because it did nothing to help with the issue and divide America even more. -
Uncle Tom’s Cabin
Uncle toms cabin was a book written to bring the issues of slavery to light. and to open the eyes of some of the stubborn slave owners. The book was the 2nd best selling book of the 19th century behind the bible. -
Bleeding Kansas
Kansas and Nebraska had just been deemed territories and were allowed to be slave or free states based on the voters decision.. Lots of people flooded into these states to get what they wanted with the vote. This sparked violence and outrage between the people. -
The Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave that went to court to sue for his freedom. He lost because the judge said he was just property and had no legal rights. This event motivated the efforts of the black activists do to the injustice. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debates
Lincoln and Douglas debate about the upcoming election and go over the topic of slavery. These debated made Lincoln more popular and helped him win the election. -
John Brown’s Raid
John Brown was against slavery and the southern states. He made a plan to raid a ferry full of weapons' and distribute them to slaves to start a revolt. He was captured along with seven of his men an hanged. -
Lincoln’s Election
Lincoln won the election by a large amount. This made the southerners worry because of his anti slavery beliefs. Less than a year after the election, 7 states had seceded from the Union. -
The Battle of Fort Sumter
After the states seceded, Lincoln used his strategy to make the south take the first shot. The fight at this fort was the last thing before the Civil War started. -
The end of the Mexican American War
After the war with Mexico there were new territories that sparked conflict. It was difficult to find peace with the decisions on making them free or slave states.
