  • Wilmot Proviso

    David Wilmot proposed a bill (the Wilmot Proviso) to exclude slavery from new territories that bought from Mexico. It seemed unfair to Southern states because they wanted to have slavery. It also increased sectional feeling = more tensions between proslavery and antislavery.
  • Free Soil Movement

    Free Soil Movement
    In 1848, a new party emerged known as the Free Soil Party. They had a similar purpose to the Wilmot Proviso: to stop the extension of slavery to new territory. This party developed more pressure in the north and the south states because it against Southerners idea(extending of slavery).
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850 was created by Henry Clay. This compromise consist of dividing Mexican Cession into Utah and New Mexico, ban the slave trade in District of Columbia (permitting to hold slaves as before), admit California as a free state in Union, and creating Fugitive Slave Act. This act upset many Northerner b/c they will have a heavy punishment if the help the runaway slaves. It growth more anxiety in north and south states.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852. Southerner said this book was unreality about the southerner's life = south as evil to slave. They also argued about the labor working hours in the northern factory= tougher than slavery's conditions. Arguing for a long time and each side were having a bad point of view to other side.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Stephen Douglas needed a consent from the South in order to build the railroad across the U.S. He introduces a bill to divided Nebraska state into Kansas and Nebraska territory. Then the conflict between the north and south led to Bleeding Kansas and the conflict was more violently= injustice to the northern states b/c his bill favored the south (extending slavery to the territories).
  • Republican Party

    Developing in 1854 at Wisconsin (free state) so they wanted to forbid the expansion of slavery and repeal Fugitive Slave Act. Having disagreement about the slavery issue led to the conflict in the states above 36° 30', line and below 36° 30', line.

    Bleeding Kansas was the fighting between antislavery and proslavery. Proslavery attacked and killing people in antislavery first, so John Brown take the revenge- attacking back and killing people in proslavery side. The conflict between the north and south cannot resolve from now on.

    Charles Sumner gets attacked and beats by Preston Brook( Butler's nephew) b/c he had a speed that against Andrew Butler. This made the Northerner very upset, but opposite with that, the Southerner was very like Brook's action, and they also sent new cane to Brook. This was creating a worse tension between the north and south states.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford Decision

    Dred Scott v. Sanford Decision
    Dred Scott wanted to sue for his freedom because he had been lived in Wisconsin ( a free state) before moving back to Missouri with his owner. The court and Roger Taney listed out so many reasons that could not consider Scott as a free slave. Their decision made the North mad and they thought this decision had been secretly made. The doubted create more desperate atmosphere between the North and the South relationship.

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    Douglas won for the reelection for the U.S Senate even though Lincoln has challenged him for the Senate seat and the Dred Scott's issue with the court's decision. However, Douglas lost the support from the South Democrats. This made the presidency of 1860 more tough for him because it would give more chance for Lincoln to won. Later the election would create the rift between the North and South (the South would leave the union if Lincoln was elected as U.S. president).

    John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry
    John Brown and his followers gave weapons (guns) to Virginia's slaves for the revolt. Unlucky, Brown and his followers handed in Virginia by Robert E. Lee as treasons. This fight seemed like a symbol of destroying the South. However, in the North, Brown seemed like a hero to many antislavery. The different opinion made the relationship of N & S turning awful.
  • Election of Lincoln

    Election of Lincoln
    After the competition in the presidency with Democrat and the Constitutional Union Party, the Republican's candidate became the 16th president. The Republican's candidate was Abraham Lincoln. But the problem was the south wanted to leave the Union if Lincoln became the president. Different in the decision led the relationship of N and S to the dead end.
