Compromise of 1850
-New territories won from Mexico would be free
- California would be admitted as a free state, and congress could not pass any laws banning slavery. -
Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
- The fugitive slave act allowed former slaves in the north to be captured and returned to their original plantations.
- This increased the tension and was the cause of John Browns raids.

Bleeding Kansas 1855
- 5,000 people came from Missouri to vote for slavery.
- Anti-slavery groups formed their own government.
- The new government was then attacked by pro slave groups.
- Due to this behavior John Brown went on to murdering several of pro slavery people.

Dred Scott Decision
- Dred Scott was a slave who was brought back from the north, and sued his slave owner for his freedom.
- The trial backfired because he was property of his slave owner.

Attack on Harper's Ferry
- John Brown wanted to encourage slaves to fight against violently for there freedom.
- He attempted to capture the arsenal, hoping to arm slaves.
- All of Browns men including were captured and killed.
- People against slavery were inspired by John Brown, and and realized the major issue, that caused massive tensions.

The Election of 1860
- Abraham Lincoln won the election.
- Since Abraham Lincoln was from the north and against slavery, southern states begin to secede from the Union.

The Nullification Crisis
- Southern states felt unfair tariffs, that are more lenient to the north.
- John C. Calhoun announced that any state could pronounce a law unconstitutional.
- The Government denied their argument.
- Henry Clay came up with the Missouri Compromise to settle this dispute.
