Brooks Attacks Sumner
After Charles Sumner gave a Speech that Andrew Butler was offended by, Butler decided that Sumner should be beat to death by cane or whip. Brooks beat Sumner with his cane outside of the capitol 3 days after Sumner's speech. This influenced the start of the civil war because it made the northern abolitionists even more angry and eager to push their message. -

The election of Abraham Lincoln contributed to starting the Civil War because Lincoln was a northern republican who was against slavery. Eventually lincoln pushed the abolition of slavery causing the Civil War.
