3/5ths comprimise
The 3/5ths comprimise was added to the Constitution to determine the representation in the House of Representatives, slaves equaled as 3/5ths of a person. This shows sectionalism over slavery and the concern of which side has power in the government. -
The Missouri Comprimise
Whether or not Missouri should be a slave or free state. The south wanted it to be slave because of its agricultural economy, and the North wanted it free because they saw slavery as morally wrong. -
Abolitionism
The Confederacy's economy heavily depended on slaver power. But in the Union, abolitionists fought tirelesly to combat them, and as an effect, ruin their economy. -
Manifest Destiny
Manifest destiny is considered to be a cause of the Civil War for many reasons. One reason is that the people were divided whether or not we should pursue manifest destiny, because of the complications it would create, such as the Mexican American war. And there is also the debate of whether or not these new states would be slave states. -
Mexican American War
THe Mexican American War spurred a large amount of contraversy in the country. While the Confederacy thought the war was justified, many other people, including Dred Scott beleived that it would increase the need for slavery. -
Comprimise of 1850
The U.S had gathered alot of land, and needed to decide whether or not the land would be free or slave, and boundary disputes. California wanted to be free, and Texas claimed that its territory extended all the way to Santa Fe. There was also confusion whether or not D.C should be a slave or free state. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Free men were being thrown into slavery, with no chance of defending themselves. The south was in favor, and in the North, the people did not like it, but law enforcement would receive a bonus if they caught a runaway slave. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
A transcontinental railroad wanted to be built, going through the louisiana territory and dividing it into the kansas territory and the Nebraska territory, which would be free or slave based on popular sovereignty. The north thought this was just an act to abolish the Missouri compromise -
Dred Scott Vs. Sandford
Dred scott was illegally taken to Illinois, a free state, while him being a slave, and he demanded his freedom. He was denied his freedom because the court decided that slaves were considered property, not people. -
The election of President Lincoln
With the country divided, there was a lot of pressure on the presidential election of 1860. The Confederacy wanted a pro slave President adn the Union wanted an anti slave President. But, the result was Abe Lincoln, who claimed to be nuetral, but the Confederacy beleived that he was in fact an abolitionist.
