  • Missouri Compromise of 1820

    Missouri Compromise of 1820
    To guide the expansion of slavery into the west, Henry Clay founded the Missouri compromise of 1820. In the Missouri compromise Maine was admitted as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. A line on the 36⁰30 parallel line marked the boundary between the North and the South. The North and South were divided on this line for the decision of slave and free states.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso was a plan that was proposed by David Wilmot in 1846. The idea was to ban slavery in most of the Southeast and land aquired by war with Mexico. Wilmot tried to get his plan to work and to get it passed but failed to. His debates later led to discussions of succesion.

    Compromise of 1850
    In 1850 Henry Clay proposed a plan for California and the Mexican Cession. The plan was to make the fugitive slave law harsher and to admit California as a free state. It also divided the Mexican Cession into New Mexico and Utah. The slavery decision in Utah and New Mexico would be decided by the voting of people.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was passed to capture runaway slaves. In the compromise of 1850 changes were made to The Fugitive Slave Act. The Fugitive Slave Act was made more strict by doing many things. One example is fining someone for not reporting a runaway slave that they saw.

    Bleeding Kansas

    In the mid 1800's settlers divided into pro-slavery supporters and anti-slavery supporters. Problems began to merge when later in 1856 John Brown led a campaign in Kansas with antislavery settlers against slavery. There goal was to end slavery. The violence brang shock to the nation and led to the creation of many political parties.

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    In the mid 1800's many people feared of letting slavery spread to the West. In 1854, Stepehn Douglas introduced the Kansas Nebraska Act. This act used the people's voice for the decision on spreading slavery to Kansas and Nebraska. This act repealed the Missouri Compromise so it angered many Northerners.
  • Dred Scott v. Standford

    Dred Scott v. Standford
    In the mid 1850's Dred Scott thought that he should be able to get his freedom after moving to a free state with his slaveowner. He sued for his freedom in Missouri in 1857 and his case went all the way to the Supreme Court. The court stated that slaves didn't have the rights to come to court and since they were considered property they couldn't file suit.

    Lincoln Douglas Debates
    The Lincoln Douglas debates were a series of debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stepehn Douglas in 1857. Abraham Lincoln was the republican candidate for the U.S senate and Stephen Douglas was the democratic candidate. In the debates, Lincoln strongly showed his Opposition to the Democratic Party.
