Missouri compromise
Missouri wanted to enter the union as a slave state but congress was conflicted about it because they did not want to give the south more power in congress. To solve this problem Henry clay made the Missouri compromise which let Missouri join the union as a slave state , Maine as a free state and banned slavery in land above 36 30'. -
Wilmot proviso
David wilmot came up with the wilmot proviso which would ban slavery in all the land acquired by the untied states from the Mexican American war but congress refused to make it a bill. -
Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 made by Henry clay entered California as a free state, let popular sovereignty decide if New Mexico and Utah would be slave or free states, and strengthened the fugitive slave act. A plan made by Stephen Douglas that divided the remaining land from the Louisiana purchase land North 40th parallel was called Nebraska, south of the 40th Airolo was called Kansas also the act allowed for popular sovereignty to decide if the states will be slave states or not . -
Bleeding Kansas
Pro and anti-slavery supporters went to Kansas and Nebraska to decide if they would be a slave state or a Free State when things got violent and each side and started fighting each other. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
A slave named Dred Scott for his freedom in court. Eventually the case went up to the Supreme Court and he justices decided that as a slave he was a piece of property that had no legal rights or recognitions to afford to be a human being. -
Lincoln-Douglas debates
A series of debates between Lincoln and Douglas normally about slavery or blacks rights. The purpose of the debates was to win the state of Illinois for their political parties.
