    Missouri wanted to enter the union as a slave state but congress was conflicted about it because they did not want to give the south more power in congress. To solve this problem Henry clay made the Missouri compromise which let Missouri join the union as a slave state , Maine as a free state and banned slavery in land above 36 30'.

    Wilmot proviso
    David wilmot came up with the wilmot proviso which would ban slavery in all the land acquired by the untied states from the Mexican American war but congress refused to make it a bill.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The compromise of 1850 made by Henry clay entered California as a free state, let popular sovereignty decide if New Mexico and Utah would be slave or free states, and strengthened the fugitive slave act. The compromise of 1850 settled the argument if the Mexican American war land acquired by the United States.

    A slave named Dred Scott for his freedom in court. Eventually the case went up to the Supreme Court and he justices decided that as a slave he was a piece of property that had no legal rights or recognitions to afford to be a human being.
