Compromise of 1850
-The Compromise of 1850 was intensly debated because one could not completed agree with comprimise.
-The person leading this died before a desicion can be made about the comprimise.
-Stephen A. Douglass attempted to take charge of the situation to end the crisis.
-However, President Fillmore convinced several reprisentatives not to vote on ideas they opposed.
-Eventually, Congress created 5 different bills simliar to the original compromise. -
The Kansas Nebraka Act
*One of the many reasons the Kansas Nebraska Act was thought up was beacuse Of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin
* The events in the book though not real angered Northerns because they believed this is what was happening in the South everyday
*This fuled dispute over slavery in Congress concerning whether the new states would be pro slavery
* Southeners determined to strongly supported the bill along with some Northern Democrats Congress passed Kansas Nebraska Act -
Conflict in Kansas
-An Abolitionist, named John Brown, thought that God had called him to end slavery.
-Then, John Brown, along with his sons, killed 5 slave owners.
-Later, they performed more acts of terror in the territory of Kansas which lead to people calling this "Bleeding Kansas". -
The Dred Scott Descion
*Certain slaves sued for their freedom until 1857 had been successful obtaining freedom
*Then a slave named Dred Scott sued for his freedom the case was debated and traveled to the Supreme Court
* Dred Scott was bought by an army doctor in a slave state his owner moved to a free state later in Dred Scott's life his owner died in Missouri where he sued for his freedom
*This case was taken all the way to the Supreme court where it that even though he lived on free soil didn't mean he was free -
Lincoln and Douglas
*Lincoln Douglas often debated over the topic of slavery where he stated that divided house could not stand
*The elction was narrowly won by Douglass but the debateds they held lingered in the heads of citizens
*Later the Southernes that felt that the Republicans power was growing had several actws of violence
*This is the biggest event that sparked the war because the election and debates made the Southerns worry that slavery would be banned -
The South Secedes
*Though the Republicans and Licoln promised to leave where slavery was Souutherns did not believe that they would keep their word
*Then a convetion was held where it was voted whether the South was going to secede or not
*It was not known how to preserve the Union beacause of the secession then one of the South's leaders said they would spit at every compromise
*In the South secession was well recieved and was actually celebrated
