Kansas and Nebraska Act
It allowed people in Kansas and Nebraska to choose if they want to allow slavery in their land, which repealed the Missouri Compromise. It helped led to the Civil War due to use of slaves in western territories. -
Missouri Compromise
Allowed saves in Missouri, yet prohibited the North to own slaves, which also allowed slaves free in western territories. This caused tension due to slaves being able to move west and be free. -
Manifest Destiny
It was a belief among the people of the United States that they were destined to expand across North America to expand and settle. -
Mexican-American War
This occurred due to American forces stationed in Texas being raided by the Mexican military because of the Americans taking over their land. This caused President Polk to declare war on the Mexicans. This lead to the civil war because after the win against Mexico the land they gained caused coflicts due to if they should or shouldnt have slaves in the states. -
Treaty of Guadalope
After the war officially ended on February 2, 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which said they surrendered and Mexico would give an additional 525,000 square miles to the United States territory which included (Arizona, Coloroado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming and Califronia). -
Compromise of 1850
Was a series of resolutions made on January 29,1850, by senator Clay, to resolve a conflict between the North and South for California and the strengthen of laws. -
The Fugitive Slave Act
This law also, known as the "Bloodhound Law" was passed by the United States Congress on September 18, 1850 and it gave southern slaveholders the right to capture slaves who had escaped to the free states. -
Bleeding Kansas
series of political confrontations in the US between 1854-1861 which was conflict between the people who stood up for slavery and those who didn't. Led to the Civil war because of the conflicts of trying to free the state of Kansas. -
Dred Scottt vs Sanford
Dred Scott was a slave who fought for his freedom in the 1840s. Dred sued his master's widow for his freedom because they toook him onto free soil in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory, so he'd legally by his rights was granted his freedom because of the free state he was at. -
Johns Brown Raid and Nat Turner
John Brown lead a small group on a raid against a military in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. With the group, it expanded and started an armed slave rebellion and ended up destroying the institution of slavery.
