  • Fugitive Slave Law

    Fugitive Slave Law
    This law stated that states in the North had to return all escaped slaves back to their owners. Even in the free states, slaves had to be returned, so slaves were never really free. This angered northern states because they didn't like slavery and they were techinally allowing it by returning slaves.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This compromise allowed states, even though it was temporary to reach a balanced agreement on many issues including slavery and new states. It helped maintain peace and sort out certain issues, even though it was a temporary solution.
  • Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin
    This book was very controversial because it revealed the true horrors of slavery. Spread throughout the north. This book angered the South and they thought it was overexaggerated. This helped the abolishinist movement.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854

    This allowed each territory or state to decide whether slavery was allowed or not. This Act tried to compromise between slavery. This Act went against the Missouri Compromise. Idea of popular sovereignty was developed and took shape.
  • Birth of the Republican Party

    As opposition grew towards slavery and increased fear in south increasing power and slavery a new party was formed that greatly opposed slavery. Very public debates and meetings about issues like slavery.

    Charles Sumner was opposed to slavery and was a republican. Gave a famous speech called 'the Crime Against Kansas." Part of his speech was spoken towards a specific SC senator Andrew Butler. Brooks was a friend of his and didn't like sumner attacking him (verbally.)

    This court case the Supreme Court ruled that African Americans were not American citizens and couldn't sue in court. Also that the Congress lacked the power to ban slavery and protected slaveowners rights in Fifth Amendment

    Brown's plan was to attack the slaveholders and help the slaves. They attacked cities and took federal armory and arsenals. He wanted slaves to join his raid, but they didn't and he and his followers were captured.

    He and his anti-slavery followers citizens and federal armory and arsenals to protest slavery. The raid didn't last long because army swooped in and killed many. This proved that the issue of slavery was getting worse.

    Election of 1860
    Stephen Douglass was a contender for the Democrats, but some democrats disliked his ideas about popular sovereignty. Abraham Lincoln won the 1860 election which resulted in seven southern states to secede from the Union.

    This battle started the Civil War. This was a confederate victory.
