Causes of the Civil War

    Slavery
    Slavery is one of the main causes in the Civil war because that is a lot of what they fought over. Some people would say that it is the main cause in the war. Most of the Northerners opposed it, and Most of the Southerners were for it.
  • States Rights

    States Rights
    This is when the Constitution was ratified. This is one of the causes of the civil war because a lot of people felt it gave the federal government a lot more power than the state government. This led to the idea of nullification, where a state didn't have to follow a law if they didn't think it was constitutional. A lot of people fought about if this idea was right or not.

    Eli Whitney Invented the Cotton Gin
    This was a cause leading to the Civil war by increasing the demand for slavery. The North, had been evolving into a multi-cultural work system. People of all races could work together, even though African-Americans were still not in the same social class. The South, however, still had the social classes in different jobs than the whites.

    Abolition
    People really started to want to abolish slavery in the early 1800s. They simply thought that slavery was not right. This is when most of the abolition movements started to take place.
  • Adding States

    When America started expanding westward, there were problems on whether or not the states would become slave states or free states. It seemed like if it was a slave state, all of the anti-slavery people got mad, and if it was a free state, all the pro-slavery people got mad. People did not agree on whether or not the states should be free or slave states, so it led to some fighting.

    Abolitionists helped slaves excape to the north. Some people that were hired to find the slaves, got beaten to death by abolitionist. This wasn't part of the War but it was still war-like actions, and it was still fighting.

    It opened up a lot of new land for America. People of Anti-Slavery and Pro-Slavery rushed into these areas to fill them so they would out-number eachother. This caused a lot more debates about if slavery was right or wrong for this country.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book that was written by Harriet Stowe. It showed real examples of slavery. It is an Anti-Slavery novel that caused an uprising through the country.
  • Election of Abe Lincoln

    Election of Abe Lincoln
    When Abe Lincoln took office, even though most people could suspect a war, it upset a lot of southerners. After he signed the Declaration of the Causes of Secession, it also made southerners unhappy. Many of the southerners thought that he was an anti-slavery man because of it.
