    At this time the potato famine started. Many people can to the South for work. The potato famine was when all the potatoes quit growing so there was no work for anyone. They all came here trying to find a place to work. Over time many of these people became slaves.
  • State Rights

    The state rights were when states believed they needed there own rights. Many people agreed that states needed there own rights but many people alse disagreed because they did not believe that states needed there own rights. They believed that the states should do whatever the government wanted them to do.
  • The Missouri Compromise

    Many additional territories were gained from U.S. Mexican War. Many abolitionists fought to make slavery illegal in many of these territories. Many states did not agree with this and wanted there own rights. They wanted to be able to make the choice for themselves.

    This was when people started to believe that slavery wasn't evil but that it was a positive good. When people started believing this many people started to get slaves. Others still wanted people to quit owning slaves.

    This was when the Underground railroad got it's name and started being used. The underground railroad helped many slaves get free. Many slaves came back and helped others get out of slavery. This made slave owners very mad. Many slave owners wanted to do somehting about it.

    The Dread Scott Decision is the decision of a slave named Dread Scott that wanted citizenship. His request was denied because everyone said that anyone with African blood could not become a U.S. Citizen.

    This was when Abraham Lincoln was elected as president. Abraham Lincoln was against having slaves. He was trying to help people get away from slavery. When he was elected as president anyone that believed in slavery was mad. They did not want him to become president because they knew he would help stop slavery. This had a major part to do with the Civil War
    because many people were mad that slaves would be set free.

    This was the the worst and most serious secession movement in the U.S. This was when the Union Armies defeated the Confederate armies in the Civil War.

    This was at Fort Sumter. The first shot surprised many people. They were not supposed to shoot unless told. Someone just shot of a cannon scarring many people on there side. This was what started a little war which then grew.
