  • Royal Proclamation

    Royal Proclamation
    The british banned colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists were angry, and resented the measure.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The British imposed import tax on sugar, and several other items entering the colonies. The colonists lost businesses if they profited from foreign trade.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    British put tax on printed matter of all kinds. The products were stamped to show they had tax on them. Colonial assemblies met in protest.

    Parliament gained full power to make laws. The fight over the right to tax the colonists remained unresolved.

    Laws placed import duties on common items. Powerful opposition in the colonies. Colonists objected duties that were intended to raise money. Boston was most active in protest.

    An angry crowd of 50-60 colonists faced a small group of British soldiers. Colonists began shouting insults, and throwing rocks. 4 colonists ended up dead. Colonists were stunned.

    British East India Company was almost bankrupt. Parliament excused the company from paying certain duties, and permitted it to sell tea to America. Colonists opposed the tea act and refused to buy tea. Boston tea party occured.

    Boston Tea Party infuriated british officials. Parliament passed 4 laws, designed to punish Boston, and to strengthen British control. The laws deepened colonial hostility towards Britain. They sent food and money to Boston, to help.

    Boundary of Quebec was extended. This angered colonists even more.
