Causes of the American Revolution

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The Proclamation of 1763 was passed by the British, and stated that no colonist could settle to the west of the Appalachian Mountains. This made the colonists mad, for they had just fought a war in order to settle west of those mountains. This was the first kickoff to the American Revolution.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act was passed in 1764 and was passed in order to pay for the war debts of the French and Indian War. It taxed things like sugar,textiles,coffee,wines, and the indigo dye. This Act gave way to a popular saying, "No Taxation without Representation."
  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament in order to pay for the high costs of sending the military to Colonies. This was the first time that the colonists had to pay taxes directly to the British. This Act taxed items like newspapers,pamphlets,bills, legal documents, licenses, almanacs,dice, and playing cards.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was the tipping point for the colonists. This event occurred after a mob had started harassing a group of British soldiers. This led to the soldiers firing their guns into the unarmed crowd and killing 3 instantly, mortally wounding 2, and injuring 6.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    The Boston Tea Party was the colony's response to the unfair ruling of the British. The "Sons of Liberty" went to the Boston Harbor dressed up as Mohawk Indians and boarded three ships. They then proceeded to throw 45 tons of tea into the Boston Harbor.

    Boston Port Act
    The Boston Port Act was the first act of the Intolerable Acts. This Act ordered for the Boston Port to close until the price of the dumped tea was earned. This lead Boston to financially deteriorate for the port had been their main source of income.
  • Massachusetts Regulating Act

    Massachusetts Regulating Act
    This Act of the Intolerable Acts was a way to have a lot of control in the colonies. This Act stated that all town meetings had to be approved by the royal governor. The Act also made all law officers subject to appointment by the royal governor.
  • Impartial Administration of Justice Act

    Impartial Administration of Justice Act
    This was the Act that almost let the British have total control over the colonies. This act let the royal governor be able to move trials to other colonies or to England. This was so that there was no favoring of sides.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    The fourth Act of the Intolerable Acts was a bit of a reliever in Quebec. This Act granted civil government and religious freedom to the Catholics in Quebec. This act was put into place probably as a way to tick off the colonists.
  • The Quatering Act

    The Quatering Act
    This Act was the fifth act of the Intolerable Acts. This Act stated that soldiers were to stay in the colonists houses or empty buildings if no barracks were available. This act also stated that the colonists had to feed the soldiers and make sure they were taken care of.
