Causes of the American Revolution

  • The Great Awakening

    Christians in North America began emphasing pour behavior and sparking a revival that undermined churches and formed new sects to appeal the government and have freedom of religion.
  • The French and Indian war

    The French and Indian War was a war fought between England and France to determine who has power over the Ohio River Valley. the Treaty of Paris 1763 ended the war England gained all French territory and French lost all its territory.
  • Proclamation line of 1763

    The British feared that more fighting would take place so they made a line that stopped American colonists from going West.
  • Treaty of Paris of 1763

    The Treaty of Paris was signed by the kingdoms of France, Great Britain, Spain and Portugal. It issued the agreement of Great Britain's victory after the Seven Years war. France was forced to give up all of its territories.
  • Quartering Act 1765

    Parliament punished Boston for the Boston Tea Party, British required colonists to allow English troops to stay and live in their homes. This increased the colonists anger at Britain.
  • Stamp Act

    This act required colonists to pay a tax on almost all printed materials.
  • Townshend Acts

    Indirect taxes that were placed on commerce goods like lead, paints, paper and tea.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre took place on March 5, 1770. This event is referred to as the first shots of the revolution. This massacre took the lives of 5 people after British soldiers shot and killed them while surrounded by a mob in Boston. The mob had been throwing snowballs, stones and sticks at the soldiers before the shots were fired. The event was publicized heavily in the newspapers at the time, which is where the event was given the name massacre.
  • Tea Act

    In May of 1773, British Parliament passed the Tea Act. This act granted the British East India Tea Company control over the tea sales in the colonies.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773. In the Boston Tea Party, a group of colonists boarded British ships, dumping 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor in protest of the Tea Act.
  • First Continental Congress

    Delegates from every colony-except Georgia- met in Philly. They did this to pressure the parliament to make change with the taxes.
  • The Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts was an event in which the British were angry over the Boston Tea Party, so they closed Boston Harbor. This act also forced colonists to house British troops.Colonists were angry about this and commenced pushing for independence.
  • Second Continental Congress

    They wanted to form an army under the rule of George Washington.
