Treaty of Paris (1763)
The signing of this treaty ended the French and Indian War. -
The Proclamation of 1763
King George made a rule that forbade settlement west of the Appalachain Mountians. He wanted to stop the fighting between the settlers and the natives. There were already settlements there, and the colonists objected. -
The Sugar Act
The British Parliment imposed a duty, or import tax, on several products, including molasses. This made colonial merchants angry. -
The Stamp Act
It required that all colonists buy special tax stamps for all kinds of products. it had to be placed on newspapers, wills, liscenses, and many other documents. The colonists protested, and Parliment repealed the act in 1766. -
The Quartering Act
Parliment required the colonists to house British troops and give them food and supplies. The British kept about 10,000 soldiers in the colonies to enforce laws. -
The Boston Massacre
An angry crowd of workers and sailors surrounded a small group of soldiers and threw rocks and snowballs at them. The soldiers fired into the crowd, killing five and wounding six. They were not punished severely. -
The Battle of Alamance
Regulators (petitioners) gathered at Alamance Creek. They were ordered to leave, but they did not. The governor ordered the militia to fire at them. The battle lasted a couple of hours, and at least 20 were killed and 150 were wounded. -
The Tea Act
The act actually lowered the price of tea, but the colonists were angry that it made the East India Company the only company to sell British tea in the colonies. -
Boston Tea Party
A group of colonists called the Sons of Liberty organized to stop tea from being unloaded in Boston. They disguised themseleves as Native Americans and dumped crates of tea into the harbor. -
The Intolerable Acts
In response to the Boston Tea Party, Parliment passed four laws that were considered to be very harsh by the colonists. They closed the port of Boston, increased the power of British control on the colonies, and strengthened the Quartering Act. -
Fighting at Lexington and Concord
The colonists formed minutemen, a new militia unit. They stored weapons, and the governor sent British troops to stop them. The first shot rang out in Lexington, called "the shot heard round the world." In Concord, there was a larger battle. The British retreated, and almost 300 had been killed or wounded when they got back to Boston. -

Declaration of Independence Signed
The Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence, which declared and justified the colonies' independence from Britan. -
Treaty of Paris (1783)
This marked the end of the American Revolutionary War. Britan recognized the independence of the United States of America.
