Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris was a document that was signed after the French and Indian War that ended the war between th British and the French in the colonies with Britain as the winner and expelled the French territory from the new world and all french territory was given to Britain. -
Proclamation of 1763
This was a document issued to keep all colonist east of the Appalachian Mountains. This angered the colonists because they had just fought the French and Indian war to gain and have access to this land but now they were being told they couldn't go to it. -
Sugar Act
This act lowered the duty on foreign molasses. It was proposed by the new prime minister, George Grenville. It also assigned cutsoms officers and created courts to collect the duties and and prosecute smuglers. Grenville hoped this act would encourage colonists to pay taxes. -
Stamp Act
Was passed by Parliament in March of 1765 and it intended to raise money from the colonies. It required colonists to pay a tax on almost all printed materials including newspapers, books, court documents, contracts, and land deeds. First time that Parliament had imposed a direct tax on the colonists. -
Townshend Acts
Passed by Parliament in 1767 which levied new import duties on everyday items such as glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea. It was proposed by the Crown's chief financial officer, Charles Townshend. -
Boston Massacre
One night in March of 1770, a group of colonists had been throwing rocks and snowballs at British soldiers guarding the Cutoms House in Boston. They were in a close proximity of the soldiers basically challenging them to shoot. Eventually, the nervous soldiers fired off into the crowd and killed 5 people. One person shot and killed was Crispus Attucks who was a sailor who may have been an escaped slave of mixed Indian and African ancestry. Patriots called this event The Boston Massacre. -
Committees of Correspondence
Orgaized networks throughout massachuted that provided leadership and promoted cooperation that was started by John Adams after the Boston Massacare. In the next two years after the boston massacare almost all of the colonies devolped a system of Commities of Correspondence. -
Boston Tea Party
An event in time when the British East India Company was going through financial problems so they lowered tea prices so low, lower than illegal smuggled tea to get colonists to buy the tea. But instead of buying the cheaper tea the colonists thought that the British were trying to trick them into paying more tax. So one night the Patriots dressed as indiand boarded the British ships and threw all of the tea overboard. -
Coercive/Intolerable Acts
Passed by Parliament to punish Boston. The port of Boston was closed which cut off trade and they said things were going to stay like this until the colonists paid for the destroyed tea from The British Tea Party and the tax. -
First Continental Congress
A group of delegates that met in 1774 and represented all of the American Colonies except Georgia. They met in Philadelphia and they were famous for the quote "Give me liberty, or give me death"
Virgina had a famous delegates Patrich Henery who became famous for the qoute listed above. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
On April 19, 1775, war erupted at Lexington and Concord which are two country towns west of Boston. General Thomas Gage had provoked the battles by sending troops to arrest John Hancock and Samuel Adams in Lexington and to seize Patriot weapons stockpiled in Concord. This was the first battle of what would later become known as the American Revolution.
