    This was 2 groups from all over the 13 coloniesm, who came together to discuss liberty. The First Continetal Congress was 56 delegates from 12 colonies (except Georgia) who met in Philadelphia on September of 1744, in response to the Intolerable Acts.

  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    This act put a three-cent tax on foreign refined sugar and increased taxes on coffee, indigo, and certain kinds of wine. These taxes affected only a certain part of the population, but the affected merchants were very vocal. This was one of the acts that colonist said they were taxed a lot.

    This was the first tax on American colonist. Newspapers, pamphlets, and other public and legal documents had to be stamped( taking money from colonist).Because of the rage the colonist had they formed the "Sons of Liberty".

    He was known for his ending comments "Give me liberty, or give me death!'. He was a outspoken critic of the Stamp Act. He was the first govenor of Virginia, and led the fight and adoption of the Bill of Rights
  • Townshend Acts

    Townshend Acts
    Laws named for Charles Townshend, British Chancellor of the Treasurer. These laws placed new taxes on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. The reaction to this act was the same as the Stamp Act and Sugar Act , they eventually repealed all the taxes except the one on tea. This was lead to violent protests by American colonist and Great Britain sent more troops.
  • Boston Massacre

    One person, an African-American man named Crispus Attacks, was killed. The British say rocks and other such weapons were hurled at them. But the British had guns, and they did open fire. The Boston Massacre deepened American distrust of the British military presence in the colonies.
  • Boston Tea Party

    They were very angry and frustrated at a new tax on tea, American colonists calling themselves the Sons of Liberty and disguised as Mohawk Native Americans. They dumped 342 whole crates of British tea into Boston harbor. Some of the same incidents occurred in Maryland, New York, and New Jersey in the next few months, and tea was eventually boycotted throughout the colonies.

    Famous silversmith who rode the countryside warning the American colonist that the British was coming.He didnt make it because he was captured by "Redcoats". His companion Dr.Samuel Presscot did. When British arrived Americans were ready.
  • The Lexington and Concord

    The Lexington and Concord
    First shots fired between American and British troops. The British chose to march to Concord because it was an arms depot. That meant that the Americans had stockpiled weapons there. No one is sure who shot first. Both sides opened fire, and the Americans were forced to withdraw. The Redcoats got to Concord, the Americans were waiting for them in force. The British was forced to retreat. A famous saying by Paul Rever was used "The British as Coming".
