Compromise of 1850
Five bills passed in congress that beneifited both the North and South in their views towards slavery. This compromise is mainly helpful for postponing the inevitable, war between the North and South. -
Fugitive Slave Law
One bill of the five included in the Compromise of 1850, this bill required Northerners to send escaped slaves back to their owners or else face jail.This law pushed more Northerners towards abolition and eventually war becasue for the first time they were a part of the slave disagreement. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin Publication
This novel changed how Americans would forever view slavery, and demanded that America delivers on its promise of freedom and equality for all races and minorities. This book persauded more Americans to be against slavery and further angered Southerners. -
Birth of the Repulican Party
A party developed in opposition to the Democractic Party and slavery, Republicans saw the expansion of slavery as "evil". This party created an opposition to those whom wanted slavery at a political level, further heightening tensions. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1954
The remaining Louisiana Purchase was divided into two territories, Kansas & Nebraska, and the slavery status would be decided by popular sovereinghty. This resulted in "Bleeding Kansas", showing that voting wasn't very effective. -
Brooks attack Sumner in Senate
Preston Brooks, a slavery advocate beat Senator Charles Sumner on the groud of the Senate with a cane. This action was appluaded by the South and angered the people in the North, creating further tensions. -
Dred Scott vs. Sanford
A decision by the supreme court that declared African Americans were not American citizens and therefore could not sue in federal court. It resulted in the Panic of 1857 which greatly effected the North. However this ruling gave the South more power as they believed this to be constutionly correct. -
John Browns Raid on Harper Ferry
John Brown and his supporters descending on Harpers ferry and captured numerious important citizens as well arsenal. Brown had hopes of turing this raid into a slave rebbelion, supplying slaves with the stolen weapons. However this was not the case most of the raiders were killed as well as John Brown. This event angered Northerners and pushed America closer to the civil war. -

The Election of Abraham Lincoln was the immediate cause of the Civil War, Beacuse Lincoln was being elected as a Republican and therefore pro-abolition the South became extremeley angrered and the Civil War began -
Shots fired at Fort Sumter, SC
The leader of the confederate forces in the Charleston Harbor area, General P.G.T Beauregard, opened fire on the Union troop that held Fort Sumter. This event was the official start of the Civil War.
