The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was made to maintain balance between free an slave states. Congress passed this on March 2, 1820, and the House of Representatives passd this on February 26, 1821. The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 declared this unconstitutional. This was a "sneak peak" of the civil war.

The North didnt want to annex Texas becasue it would increase slave power. Texas was supposed to be annexed in 1844, but the North fought to keep it out of the United States. In 1845 James K. Polk was elected president and annexed Texas.

Political Parties Formed- Moderates/Republicans
( I only have the year for this date)
The Republican party was formed in 1854. The group was typically anti-slavery and the North favored it more than the South. Republicans were usually former Whigs, Free-soils, and some Democrats. A Moderste Republican is someone who believes in the beliefs of the Ten Commandments, but believes that problems should be solved with logic, not religion. Abraham Lincoln was a Moderate Republican.

Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854
The Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Comrpomise of 1820. This new act stated that slavery shall be decided by the people in each state. The author was Stephen Douglass. Kansas did not respond well to this becaue half of the state was for slavery, and the other half was against it! Fighting over the two sparked the idea of the Civil War.

Dred Scott Decision
In 1846 Anti-Slavery lawyers sued claiming Dred Scott should be free since he had lived on free land for a very long time. On March 6, 1857 7 out of 9 Justices declared he had no rights. This affected all of the 4 million African Americans, which had been voting therefore having rights, since 1776. The Dred Scott decision widened the gap between the North and the South.

Lincoln-Douglass debate
( These events did not take place over one day, so the date above is not right, only the year is.)
These debates took place during the 1858 campaign for the Senate seat. Douglass was a democrat and was already the Senator elected in 1847. Lincoln, at this moment in time, was unknown and did not like the seperated US( anti-slavery and slavery). Lincoln lost the Senate race only to come back an beat Douglass for the presidency in 1860.
