  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    Description: The British Parliament passed the Sugar Act in 1764 in order to help pay for their debt from the French and Indian War as well as to pay for the troops guarding the Proclamation Line of 1763. It forced the colonists to pay a 3 cent tax on goods like sugar, coffee, indigo and certain kinds of alcohol. The colonists were not happy with this law because they had no say in parliament. The slogan “No Taxation without Representation” became popular in the colonies.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The British Parliament passed the Stamp Act in order to support the British soldiers protecting the Proclamation Line. The Stamp Act required that a stamp purchased by the British government had to be placed on all important documents like court papers, newspapers and even playing cards. The colonists were outraged because they were paying for troops that were keeping them out of the land they had just fought for in the French and Indian War and they still had no representation in Parliament
  • Sons of Liberty

    Sons of Liberty
    Description: A well-organized political organization shrouded in secrecy that was established to undermine British rule in colonial America. This group spang up in port cities like Boston and NYC. Group member were men from all walks of life, and they were known to be hot headed and violent.
  • The Townshend act

    The Townshend  act
    The Townshend Acts taxed imported items such as paper, glass, paint and tea. The English Parliament passed this act to cover costs of the French and Indian War, as well as to show that they still had power over the colonies. The colonists were outraged with this act so they held public demonstrations, boycotted products and smuggled in goods. Parliament eventually decided to repeal this act because of colonial protests.

    Boston Tea Party
    A form of protest that took place in Boston. The rebelouis Colonist dumped 342 boxes of tea into the harbor dressed as Native Americans from the Mohawk clan.
  • The Coercive Acts

    The Coercive Acts
    The British government was mad about the Boston Tea Party. To punish the colonists they passed a series of acts called the Coercive Acts. The Colonist renamed they acts the Intolerable acts because they were not tolerable.
  • The First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress
    Lots of men from the 13 Colonies met at the Carpenters Hall in Philadelphia for a meeting called The First  Continental Congress. Representatives from 12 colonies were there. The group discussed the England problem. Members from the meeting sent a petition to the King. They said that they were still loyal to the king. They also said it was unfair for the Parliament to tax the Colonist without allowing a say. If England did not respond they would meet again.
  • Battles of Lexington and Concord

    Battles of Lexington and Concord
    900 British Redcoats were heading to Lexington & Concord.  60 men fought the 900 British Redcoats at Lexington and nobody knows who shot the shot heard around the world. 8 dead and 10 wounded for the Colonists. Redcoats reach Concord at 9:00 AM to search around the town for weapons. They did not find any weapons. British Soldiers retreat 20 miles to Boston. Over 1000 matilda men met them and made the British Pay.
