  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    Seven year war with the British and French colonizers and the American Indians. The war ended up giving the British control of Quebec and Florida, effectively eliminating any other European countries from the immediate vicinity. This war also left Great Britain in crippling debt.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Lowered the tax of molasses from 6 cents a gallon to three, but the British also started enforcing a punishment for smuggling. Colonial smugglers can also now be tried in British courts. The the colonists were frustrated with this new tax because they didn’t have a vote in parliament.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    All printed material now must be stamped. The colonists responded to this tax with a boycott, which eventually got the act repealed
  • Declaratory Act

    Declaratory Act
    Said that the British government had the power and rights to tax the American colonies. The colonists saw it as disgraceful that parliament could tax the colonists without giving them the power to vote.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Stopped the smuggling in American ports. The colonists responded by boycotting British goods.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    Taxed all tea except that delivered by the British charter company, this flooded America with cheap tea. The colonists got angry that parliament would have the nerve to tax something so essential to life as tea that it eventually led to the Boston tea party, the destruction of over one million dollars of valuable goods.

    American Colonies declare independence from Great Britain. Colonists fight against the British troops and govern themselves.
