    On this day, the Missouri Compromise was passed by Congress. Missouri had long wanted to admitted into the Union as a slave state. Finally, Congress allowed it in as a slave state. However, to balance it out to avoid unrest, so they admitted Maine as a free state. The Compromise also drew a line, the Mason Dixon line, that said any region south would allow slavery and slavery would be banned in any region North.

    Congressman David Proviso from Pennsylvnia proposed this bill that was designed to rid the acquired land from the Mexican-American War of slavery. However, the act was blocked, due to the fact that the Senate's majority was from the South. Though it didn't pass, it pushed the fight to end slavery even more.

    The Compromise of 1850 was a series of laws that attempted to solve the debate over slavery. It was introduced by Congressman Henry Clay. It amended the Fugitive Slave Act by saying that slaves could be captured in the North. It also ended the slave trade in Washington D.C. It provided benefits for both the North and the South, but there was still protest over it.

    It was introduced as part of the Compromise of 1850 by Henry Clay. It said that all escaped slaves had to be returned. This was enforced in both the North and the South. If they weren't a slave, it didn't matter. If someone accused you, you had to be taken, no matter what, and there's no trial. It caused resentment in the North and was seen as a victory in the South.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a novel published by Harriet Beecher Stowe in 1853. The novel inform the reader about an enslaved man who was abused by his cruel owner. When the novel was published, it created a lot of tension between the north and south. Northerns was shocked and viewed slavery as a serious problem. Southern viewed the novel as propaganda and misleading information. When President Lincoln met the author he said " So, you're the lady that started this whole war."

    In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska act passed which allowed the people in the territories to decide the slavery issue by popular sovereignty. After the act was passed the north and south divided. Southerners supported it hoping it will bring in new slave states while northerners were outraged and felt betrayed. Later in the year, act was signed into a law. A lot of anti/pro slavery settlers came to Kansas.This caused a lot bloody violence in Kansas. Due to this, Kansas was known as Bleeding Kansas.

    Dred Scott was born into slavery in 1799. As he grew up, his owners lived in a state where slavery was illegal. In 1875, Dred sued his owners for his freedom. In his defense, he argued that he lived in a place where slavery was illegal meaning that he was a free man. Chief Justice Roger B.Taney wrote the decisions that Dred can't sue his owners because was a slave meaning that he wasn't an american citizen. He also stated that slaves are property protected y the United States Constitution.

    The Lincoln Douglas Debate was a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln ,who was the Republican candidate, and Stephen Douglas, the democratic candidate, during the Illinois senatorial campaign. One of the main issue discussed was slavery and the expansion of it into the territories.

    John Brown's Raid was an effort made by John Brown to make an armed slave revolt by taking over a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown did this in an effort to try and get rid of slavery. On October 17, marine soldiers arrive led by Colonel Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant J.E.B. Stuart. By the morning of October 19th, the soldiers had invaded Brown and his follower. 10 of his men died including two of his sons. Brown’s raid made any deal between North and South nearly impossible

    The secession of the south and events it is comprised of began on the day of Lincoln's inauguration on May 12 until June 8 where eleven states cut ties with the Union.The first seven seceding states set up a provisional government at Montgomery, Alabama. After some aggression at Fort Sumpter on April 12, 1861, the border states of Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina joined the new government, which then moved its capital to Richmond, Virginia.
