    California passed a free state. Slavery was to be decided by popular sovereignty. Slavery in D.C ended. A strict fugitive slave law was made. Border problems between New mexico and Texas were no more.

    Fugitive Slave Law
    Citizens were required to capture runaway slaves. If they didnt, they could be fined for $1,000 or put in jail for 6 months. Free blacks were captured and sent back to slavery.

    A novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Showed the evil of slavery. Northerners changed. Southerners believed it was full of lies.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Divided lands into Kansas and Nebraska territories.
    Decided that slavery would be decided by popular sovereignty. Led to violence in the Senate. Pro-slavery and Anti-slavery settlers were in one area and this lead to conflict.

    Pottawatomie Creek Killings
    With the violence going on in Kansas, John Brown and four of his sons take the law into their hands. They pulled five pro slavery men out of their beds in the middle of the night and killed them. John Brown believes he was doing good because it was what god told him to.

    Dred Scott Decision
    Dred Scott was a slave. He lived in a slave territory with his owner. When the owner moved back to the slave state, he died. Scott filed a lawsuit but lost because he was nothing but "property". The court ruled that Congress could not ban slavery and therefore it could spread.

    Lincoln and Douglass debated! Lincoln believed that slavery shouldn't be allowed to spread and Douglass believed slavery should be decided by popular sovereignty.
  • Raid on Harper's Ferry

    Raid on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown led five blacks and thirteen whites into Harper's Ferry. They wanted to raid an arsenal and start a slave revolt. But no one volunteered. A lot of men died and he was arrested.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Lincoln ran against Douglass in the election of 1860. The southern states despised Lincoln and supported Douglass but Lincoln still won. Southerners talked about seceding from the union.
