  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The Proclamation of 1763 was right after the French and Indian War. The colonists started settling on land west of the Appalachian mountains. However the British made a proclamation stating that no colonists could settle in the west due to not wanting to disrespect the Indians. This made the colonist start questioning British rule because they thought they earned that land.

    The Stamp Act was the first tax directly on the American colonies. This was the first time in 150 years that the colonies will pay a tax not to their local legislatures, but directly to the British. This tax was used on newspapers, pamphlets, bills, legal documents, licences, almanacs, and even dice and playing cards.

    The sugar act was enacted to pay off the debt of the French and Indian War. It was also used to pay for the expense of watching over the colonies.

    The Townshend Acts
    The Townshend acts was put in place to cover the cost of "ruling and protecting the colonies." The items that were taxed are paper, tea, glass, lead, and paints. All of the items that were taxed were major imports for Boston.

    The Boston Massacre started when a mob of colonists taunted, yelled at, and threw rocks and clubs at British soldiers in the streets. When a club hit a British soldier shots were fired instantly into the crowd. Three people died instantly, two were mortally wounded, and three were badly injured.

    The Boston Tea Party occurred when a group of men called the "Sons of Liberty" boarded three British ships. These ships were called The Beaver, The Elanor, and The Dartmouth. Dressed as Mohawk Indians they dumped forty tons of tea into Boston harbor.

    The British stopped imports and exports going through Boston harbor. Then the British switched the capitol of Massachusetts over to Salem, and made the official port of Massachusetts, Marblehead.

    The regulating act made all officers of the law legally obligated to serve the British. This act also declared that there could be no town meetings that were not approved by the British.

    This act involved letting a judge move the court case to mix up the jury. The Judge would only do this if he thought the jury of that town "wouldn't judge a case fairly" otherwise perceived as they wouldn't rule in his favor.

    The Quartering Act allowed British soldiers to barge into homes and stay their however long they like if barracks weren't available. It was a law that the family had to be welcoming and hospitable. This included giving up a bed, doing the soldiers laundry, cooking the soldier a meal, and basically waiting on the soldier hand and foot.

    The British were being very petty when they administered The Quebec Act. The decree allowed Quebec (one of the other colonies) have religious freedom. This is petty because, for years Boston had been asking the British for religious freedom but the British gave it to Quebec easily.
