The Missouri Compromise
When the new state Missouri came into the nation, they didn't know whether to make it a slave or free state because it would throw them off balance, so the made a line (the Mason Dixon Line) that separated the country in half, North and South and all of the states above the line were free(except for Missouri) and all of the states below the line were slave. They also made Maine it's own state. -
Compromise of 1850
When the people all move to California and the population grows rapidly and they have to make the decision of whether it's a free or slave state. They ended up being a free state. -
Bleeding Kansas
Fights break out as people vote for slave or free
Northerners and southerners sneak into Kansas to cheat and vote. -
Kansas/Nebreska Act
Douglas wanted a Northern Rail Road route but needs Southern support. If the South goes along with northern route the Missouri Compromise line will be erased. Popular Sovereignty will replace the line (each state will vote for themselves on slavery). This passes.

Sumner Brooks Incident
Northern Senator(Sumner) spoke poorly of a southern senator, (Butler) while arguing against the expansion of slavery. Butlers cousin (Brooks) beat Sumner on Senate floor.

John Brown's Raid
Fought against slavery supporters at "Bleeding Kansas". Attempted to lead a slave uprising at Harper's Ferry, VA. Believed he was sent to end slavery, "God's avenging angel"
