Tasmania is now a state in Australia. In 1803, the island was established by the British as a penal colony. It was called Van Diemen's Land and became part of the British colony of New South Wales. In 1824, Van Diemen's Land became an independent colony In 1856 Britain changed the name to Tasmania.

William de Vlamingh was a Dutch sea captain for over 50 years, who explored the west coast of Australia. In the late 17th century, he landed in what people call Perth.

During 1770 he discovered the east coast of Australia, which he claimed for Great Britain under the name of New South Wales. Cook was promoted to the rank of commander when he returned to England in 1771.

In the first fleet, there were about 11 ships of the size of a normal ferry. They left ports mouth with about 1480 men, women and children. Most of the people there were British, and some were African and french convicts.

By the early 1820s, they were approximately 1000 Catholics, not including convicts. The church was made by the archbishop, John Bede Polding. The church was named after him, St Johns Church. It was burnt down in a fire in 1865, while other churches replaced others.

St, Vincents Hospital Melbourne is one of Australians largest private catholic hospitals. In 1998 the two private hospitals mercy private hospital and St Vincent private hospital merged into one big hospital. the sisters of charity had the hospitals run independently for over 70 years.

World war , also known as the first world war was a global war. That lasted from 1914 to 1918. Australia joined in with Germany and Britain to make one big colony. The first war was not expected.
