The Castle was built
The castle was built in the 8th century by the Moors when they occupied Portugal -
May 4, 1095
The Moors conquered the castle again.
In 1093 the Spanish King (Afonso VI) conquered the Castle from the Moors and two years later, in 1095, the Moors defeated Afonso VI and conquered the Castle again. -
May 4, 1147
Lisbon was conquered to the Moors
D. Afonso Henriques conquered Lisbon to the Moors. When this happened the Moors who were in the Castle of Sintra surrendered to the army of D. Afonso Henriques. -
EARTHQUAKE
The biggest earthquake of History hapenned in Lisbon!
It was followed up by an enormous tsunami!
Lisbon was almost gone and Sintra was also violently destroyed.
The Castle of the Moors didn't resist to the earthquake's violence and some of its walls and towers were destroyed. -
D. Fernando II and his love for Sintra
The castle was in ruins.In 1830 the D.Fernando II, the husband of the Portuguese Quenn D. Maria II, decided to recovered the Moors Castle because of his great love for Sintra. He wanted the castle to become a romantic place. -
Finally...a Monument!
The Portuguese Government wrote a decree saying from that day on The Moors Castle was classified as a National Monument. -
Reconstracion began
It was in this year that the Portuguese Government gave orders to begin rebuilding the damaged walls of the castle. The work was done section by section and took several years. -
The reconstruction continues
Once again another reconstruction began. It was the most important one till our days because some parts of the walls were rebuilt, the stairs and the battlements were rebuit in many parts of the castle and a an important cleaning was done, too. -
Cleaning
Again in this year another important cleaning took place in the Castle of the Moors -
World Cultural Heritage Monument
In 1995 the UNESCO declared the whole Sintra's area as a World Cultural Heritage -
It's a must see!
Nowadays the Castle of the Moors is used as a tourist attraction, a magnific monument with magnific views. It's a must see!
