Department of Energy
In response to the crises of the 1970s, Carter added a Cabinet position to the Executive Branch called the Department of Energy. This was formed in the hope to consolidate federal energy functions and to expand the idea of energy conservation alongside the development of different energy sources. Overall, this new department plays a crucial role in advancing the nation's energy goals and promoting economic growth. -
Man of the Year Award
Carter is the face of Time magazine and wins the "Man of the Year" award. His victory in the 1976 election was viewed as a new version of leadership and a shift in American politics differing from the previous issues such as the Watergate Scandal. -
Panama Canal Treaty
The Panama Canal was a zone run by the United States since 1914. On September 7th, 1977 President Carter signed two treaties which would return the control of the canal zone to Panama by the year 2000. These were the Panama Canal Treaty and the Neutrality Treaty. This action by Carter was a major step within the United States and Latin America relations. -
Camp David Accords
One of Carter's greatest accomplishments in foreign policy. As the conflict between Egypt and Israel continued, Egypt refused to recognize Israel and Israel continued in their occupation of Egyptian territory. Carter then decided to lead Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Prime Minister Menachem Begin to a historic agreement for intensive peace talks which have become known as the Camp David Accords. -
Carter proposes the National Energy Act
The national energy act was presented to mainly focus on the reduction of the nation's dependency on oil. Carter put in place a higher tax on gas guzzling cars, a specific focus on nuclear energy, and provided tax credits for homeowners that were seeking to make their homes more energy efficient amongst many other things. -
Department of Education
Carter established the Department of Education which was aiming to improve the national education systems. This ensured equal access and quality to education across the United States by enforcing civil rights laws. Due to Carter's decisions, our country provided better opportunity for every child to receive quality education. -
Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act
This was an act signed into law by Carter to protect over 100 million acres of land in Alaska for future generations. The size of the nations national park and refuge system had doubled while creating ten more new national parks. Overall, this law balanced the protection of Alaska's natural heritage and left a lasting impact on its conservation.
