Charles Martel's army was the last defense against the Moors, who were trying to take over the Frankish Empire. So he camped out on top of a wodded hill. Because the Moors had to fight uphill they lost and this marked the first time an infantry division beat calvary. -

Bloody verdict at Verden
Charlemagne made everyone who he had conquered swear oath to him and his empire. But in 782 he found some rebels who were worshipping false gods. He killed 4500 rebels in one day, which some say cause the river to run red with blood for days.
