Navigation Acts
Purpose: Merchants could only sell goods to English and could only ship from English ships. Outcome: Colonists started smuggling. -
Proclamtion of 1763
Purpose: Colonists couldn't move west of Appalachian Mountains. Outcome: Colonists who paid for land on the west were angy and they pushed the British to let them move to the land they paid for. -
Sugar Act
Purpose: Lowered tax on imported molasses and sugar Outcome: Let officers seize goods without going to court and didn't let colonists be secure in their homes. -
Stamp Act
Purpose: Passed law to tax almost all printed material such as newspapers, wills, and playing cards. Outcome: Protester burned effigies and they started to refuse to buy stamps and start boycotts. -
Declaratory Act
Purpose: Stated that parliament had right to tax and make decisions for British colonies "in all cases". Outcome: Act was repealed and colonists urged people to boycott. -
Townshend Act
Purpose: Taxes only applied to imported goods such as glass, tea, and paper. Outcome: Colonists organized another boycott and Daughters of Liberty were made and told people to wear home-made fabris. -
Tea Act
Purpose: Law allowed company virtual monopoly of trade for tea in America and let company sell tea directly to shopkeeper and bypass colonial merchants. Outcome: Colonists vowed to stop the East India company's ships from unloading. The "Boston Tea Party" was formed. -
Coercive Acts
Purpose: Punish people of Masachusetts for their resistance to British Law. Outcome: Closed Boston Harbor until Massachusetts people paid for ruined tea. Forced Bostonians to shelter soldiers in own homes. -
Quebec Act
Purpose: Set up government for Quebec and gave Quebec west side of Appalachian Mountains and north of Ohio River. Outcome: Ignored colonial claims to the area. Colonists expressed their feelings in their name for new laws - Intolerable Acts.
