    In 1807 Robert Fulton made the first ever steamboat. It would move by a large paddle on the side and could push other boats upstream. The first steamboat travled at only 5 miles per hour.

    Railroads were introduced in the 1830s only five years later many small railroad companies used them to travel only a couple of miles. As another five years go buy these railroads would now criss cross the entire state of New York.

    Henry T Williams creates the trans continental map of the pacific railroad. This map shows where the railroads are and where there are train stations along the tracks. This helped everyone know about the tracks and where they went.

    Railroad take over
    By the 1900s the railroads stretched for thousands of miles. Trades started to depend on the railroads. Cities started to grow such as Chicago. Railroads brought livestock while ships brought cole and iron. Chicago's industrial businesses were booming.
