    NCAA division mens ice hockey championship
    4 Schools were playing in the tournament, Colorado College, Dartmouth, Michigan, and Boston College. Michigan ended up winning the National Championship 8-4 over Dartmouth. There are now 19 teams in the league.
  • Canada sports hall of fame

    Canada sports hall of fame was established to remember the achievment of great Canadaian and sports players. There are 529 honoured players in the hall of fame.
  • CFL was invented

    CFL was invented
    The CFL was founded on this date, however there was professional football being played in Canada for years before the CFL was founded. There were 9 teams at the time, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, Calgary, BC, Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. All of those teams exist now except for Ottawa which is coming back this upcoming season.

    Prior to 1979 helmets were optional to wear in the NHL, barely any players wore them. But in August of 1979 the president of the NHL John Ziegler said that all players must wear helmets, only exception is to players who signed contracts prior to June 1st 1979. There were plenty of proposals prior to 1979 but they were all rejected.

    In 1992 the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series. This was big for Canada because they are the first and only Canadian team to win the World Series. Then in 1993 the Blue Jays do it again becoming only the 3rd franchise in MLB history to win back-to-back World Series rings. Also Joe Carter hit the game winning 3-run Homerun, he is only the 2nd to hit a walk-off homerun in MLB history.

    Hockey legend Wayne Gretzy has now retired from being a hockey player. He had setmany hockey records and has won 4 Stanley cups. He played for Edmonton, Los Angeles and ST.Loius. He was imediately put int othe Hall of Fame.

    The mens ice hockey has won gold for the first time in 50 years. They beat United Staes for the gold win by 5-2. this win had restablished Canada status as a powerful hockey team.
