Charlotteown Conference Begins
Over the next 8 days (September 1-9) delegates from many future provinces attend a meeting to discuss the possibility of confederation. -
Quebec City Conference Begins
The Quebec City Conference, which would last until the 29th, begins. At this conference the delegates are hammering out the conditions of Confederation. -
Fenian Raids Begin
A radical Irish-American group that was against British presence in Ireland was invading the British Colonies in Canada hoping to divert troops. The most serious of these raids took place in Ridgeway, Ontario. -
London Conference
The Parliment in London, England passes resolutions that are redrafted as the British North America Act. -
Confederation Day
On this date Canada became an official country. It's four provinces were Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Sir John A. Macdonald is sworn in as Canada's first Prime Minister. -
Canada Purchases Rupertsland and Riels First Rebellion
Canada agrees to purchase Rupertsland from the Hudson's Bay Company. A few months later Louis Riel creates a legal provisional government. Riel's first rebellion will begin in November of 1869. -
Province and Territory Created
Métis rights recognized, as Manitoba becomes a province. However Riel will have to flee Canada because of Scott's execution.
Also, the Northwest Territories become an offical territory of Canada. -
New Provinces Join Confederation
Prince Edward Island joined confederation on this date, and on July 20 British Columba joined. -
Riel's Northwest Rebellion
Louis Riel returns from the United States to lead the Northwest Rebellion and proclaims an illeagal provisional government. -
Louis Riel Hanged
Louis Riel was defeated and captured on May 12, 1885. He was tried for treason and convicted at the beginning of August. He was hanged on this date. -
