    In this time period, men were very worrisome about their hair and how to style it to perfection. In this earlier part of the 1800's, men usually did not use artificial products, there hair was very disordered, dry and natural. The men believed that keeping their hair natural portrayed their individuality. At this point in time, they wanted to express themselves and nothing more.

    In the earlier years of the 1800's, it was rare to see men with facial hair. This was because at this time, the men were more focused on the hair on their head. The men would use knives to shave their beards to as thin as possible so that their hair could stand out more.
  • The "Jane Austen" hairstyle

    The "Jane Austen" hairstyle
    This hairstyle was a woman's hairstyle in the 1820s. The hair was parted in the centre and pulled back very smoothly to the back. Women would usually wear hats and bonnets with this hairstyle. It was named the Jane Austen hairstyle for the reason that the famous author who recently published "Pride and Prejudice" wore her hair in this fashionable manor

    Hair Curling
    In 1830, women began to curl their hair in various ways. They would have the choices of curling their hair upwards, curling their hair into loops or creating their own style. The curling of hair looked very graceful and dignified where Queen Victoria began wearing her hair in this manner years later. This was a very youthful style, however, the Queen at the age of 30 still attempted to wear this attractive style.

    This women's hairstyle was worn by Queen Victoria during the Victorian Age. The Victorian Age was the time period of huge industrial and economic expansions spanning from 1837 to 1901. Queen Victoria was the ruler of the United Kingdom and Canada. She wore this hairstyle on many occasions. Women would put their hair up and collect it at the back of the head. Loops were made around the ears to create a very stylish look. The Queen added more detail to her hair to show her superiority.

    This women's hairstyle has a strict part in the middle of the hair with the hair tightly enclosing the ears. It was very stylish at the time, however, people with very thick hair had difficult hearing with the constriction towards the ears.

    The hair roll was a huge women's trend throughout the 1850s, the sides of the hair were rolled to form an almost hat looking style. The rest of the hair was let down to form an elegant appearance. The rolls also show off the stunning stone inside of the earring.
  • High Wave

    High Wave
    Men and young boys wore there hair mainly in a wavy style in the early 1850's. There hair was generally parted, it was slicked back and combed. When combed, it was made into a very high wave in the middle of their head, while the sides were very short, making the top look abnormally high. The hair used a lot of artificial products to allow the hair to stand up and reach maximum elevation.

    Mid-1800s Facial Hair
    In the 1830's, a ruffle of hair began to form around the cheeks and jaws of the men. The men started to except facial hair and began to grow out their facial hair. Men still did not like the hair around their mouths, therefore, they left that clean shaven. The men's beards were connected to their sideburns as the style in that time period. Some men had very full and thick beard, however the beard in the picture is the main one used in the 1850's
  • The Wave Decreased

    The Wave Decreased
    After 5 years of the high waved hair for men and boys, the wave's height was decreased. The height of the center of the head is still higher than the sides, however, it is not the abnormal height like in the year 1850. Also, it is now simply parted and the hair was gently waved back with a comb. Still, artifical products were used to aid in the waving of the hair. This hairstyle was sometimes worn with the sides of the hair covering the ears. Both styles are shown in the picture.
  • Padded Wing

    Padded Wing
    After about 6 years of the hair roll being the peak of fashion, it evolved into the padded wing. The padded wing is a women's hairstyle which was created using the idea of the hair roll. The hair roll was softened and made into a more wing shape, this was why it was called the padded wing.
  • Padded Wing Evolved

    Padded Wing Evolved
    Approximately one year after the padded wing was created, it further evolved. The hair began to part through the middle and was tucked closer to the ears in thick pads or rolls which brought back the problem of strenuous hearing.
