Canadian Events between 1750-1850

  • 14. The newspaper arrives in Canada from New England. The Halifax Gazette is published making it Canada's first newspaper.

  • 13. Halifax, Nova Scotia is officially established with British settlers. The area was still important to French speaking settlers called the Acadians.

  • 15. The expulsion of the Acadians by the British from their homeland occurs. This occurs because they will not swear an oath to the British crown.

  • 16. The Seven Years' War begins between the British and French.

  • 17. The Battle of the Plains of Abraham occurs. Québec City is captured by the British led by General James Wolfe

  • 18. The Seven Years War ends with the Treaty of Paris. Britain gains control and ownership of the remaining French colonies in New France.

  • 19. The Québec Act is passed by the British Parliament. This act outlines the new legal system which combines French civil law and British criminal law. Religious freedom for Roman Catholics is established.

  • 20. United Empire Loyalists start arriving in Canada fleeing the American revolution.

  • 21. Captain James Cook arrives on the west coast of Vancouver Island during one of his explorations on the sea.

  • 22. The North West Company is established. They provide competition for The Hudson's Bay Company in the fur trade in what will become Western Canada.

  • 23. Upper and Lower Canada are established. The capital city in Upper Canada was Newark then moved to Toronto and the capital city of Lower Canada was Quebec City.

  • 24. General Isaac Brock dies in the Battle of Queenston Heights during the War of 1812.

  • 25. Laura Secord warns the British forces of an impending military attack by the Americans.

  • 26. The War of 1812 ends with the Treaty of Ghent.

  • 27. The Hudson's Bay Company and North West Company amalgamate into one company.

  • 28. Rebellions break out in Upper Canada led by William Lyon Mackenzie and Lower Canada led by Louis Joseph Papineau.

  • 29. Lord Durham is sent to Upper and Lower Canada to report back to the British Crown the reasons behind the rebellions.

  • 30. The Durham Report is released. Several important recommendations emerge from the report leading to the union of Upper and Lower Canada into one colony named The Province of Canada.

  • 31. John A Macdonald is elected to the Legislative Assembly of Canada to represent Kingston, Ontario.

  • 32. Queen Victoria makes Ottawa the new capital of the Province of Canada.

    Ottawa was selected because of the distance from the American border, its proximity to the border of Canada East and West and its excellent water transportation routes.
