Canada's Role in the Cold War
This timeline is explaining the role that Canada played in the Cold War. This timeline will have about 15 different events with a description of each event. -
Quebec's Padlock Law
Invented to prevent propaganda surrounding communism. This was to eliminate the idea of communism from all Quebec citizens. The government gave power to the police to destroy any material promoting communism. -
Gouzenko Affair
Assigned by the Soviet Union to the Soviet embassy in Ottawa to spy on Canada. Russia wanted to move Igor back to Russia, but he didn't want to. He started spilling information to the Canadian government about Russia's military plans. This became very helpful for the Canadian government. -
Berlin Blockade
The iron curtain was created around the border of Berlin, by Russia. This was to prevent supplies from reaching Berlin. By doing this Russia broke an agreement with former allies(including Canada). Canada supplied goods to Berlin by air fair. -
International Alliances: NATO
All western countries of the Berlin blockade became allies of NATO. This was to keep peace and prevent a nuclear holocaust from happening. Canada did join NATO. -

Korean War
China attacked South Korea. US supported South Korea. Canada was 3rd in aid sent to Korea. 406 Canadians were killed and over 1100 were injured. Canadian troops stayed in Korea until 1955 on a peace keeping misson. -
UN Peacekeeping: The Suez Crisis and Pearson wins Nobel Prize
Egyptian leader took full control of the cannal. For France and Britain this was a loss of power and wealth. France, Britain, Isreal agreed to regain control of the cannal. The Soviet Union threatened to help Egypt if there was a war. Canada sent 800 troops to help. On July 6th, 1956 Lester B. Pearson received a Nobel Prize for his contribution to the Suez Crisis. -
Continental Alliances: NORAD and DEW line
The USA and Canada agreed to defend eachother from a missile attack. DEW's were high powered radars that could detect an enemy aircraft or missile from 4800km away. this was a huge advantage for the USA and Canada because if DEW picked up on the missile, this would have given citizens of the USA and Canada a warning before the missile hit even if there wasn't a warning given by the attacking country. -

Sputnik and Canada's Space Program
The fear was that the rocket used ot launch Sputnik could be used to launch an ICBM. In 1962 the US spotted Russia making bombs in Cuba. Canadian government proposed a plan to examine all areas suspected to have bombs. This was declined by other countries. -
Avro Arrow and its Cancallation
The Avro Arrow was by far the best plane Canada had ever created. The release of the Avro Arrow was over shadowed becuase of the launch of Sputnik on the same day. When teh Avro Arrow was cancelled, this cost over 14000 jobs. During the Diefenbaker era the economy slowly declined and the Avro Arrow cancellation was a large contributer to the slow economy. -
Diefenbaker, Bomarc Missiles and Nuclear Warheads in Canada
56 American missiles were developed in Canada instead of where the public felt the missiles should have been developed in, which was the USA. This was kept secret from the publlic for a long time. Once the public found out they never forgave him because they didn't re-elect him in the next election. -
The Cuban Missile Crisis
Russia was caught develping missiles in Cuba. A US spy flighing over Cuba photographed the suspected missile camps. A boat blokade was in place for Cuba. This prevented Russian boats from bringing supplies to Cuba. The blokade ended the Cuban missile crisis in 12 days. -
Vietnam War & Draft Dodgers in Canada
Canada didn't send troops to Vietnam right away. Canada was involved with secretly sending messages to North Vietnam with the USA. Canada later called for the bombing of North Vietnam. -
Canada-Soviet Hockey Series
This was an 8 game series between the best Canadian NHLers and the Soviet Union's best pro hockey team/players. Canada was surprised to see that the Soviet's were equally as good as the Canadian's. The most historic goal in hockey history was when Paul Henderson scored with only 34seconds to go in the third period to give Canada the lead in the final game of the series that determined who won the Summit Series. -

The Fall of the Soviet Union
From 1982-1991 the Soviet Union collapsed and lost all power. Mainly due to the Soviet military build up of the expense for a drematic domestic development. This was a time of many different leaders for the Soviet Union. No leader lasted more than 4 years. -
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
A series of racial political changes occured in the eastern bloc. This was associated with the loss of power to pro. Soviet governments in Poland and Hungary. When the Berlin Wall fell this gave a lot more freedom to the citizens and government of Berlin.
